Remote Learning

At Western we aim to ensure that remote learning is delivered effectively to all our children through a blended approach. This means that children will receive a mixture of live lessons and other remote methods such as work set via learning platforms, PowerPoints, videos etc. Different approaches to remote learning suit different types of content and pupils (Education Endowment Foundation 2020). Live lessons, whilst useful for delivery of some subjects, are not always the best or most effective way to offer remote learning. (Ofsted~ What’s Working Well in Remote Education 2021). At Western, clear explanations, scaffolding and feedback will be given to our children in a range of ways to support our learners.

All our pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, have access to an i-pad. Children arriving new to the school during a closure, will be set up expediently with an i-pad. If a child has no access to online learning, the school will do all it can to enable access. Alternatively, pupils will be supplied with a pack of paper-based activities or they will be offered a place in school if one is available. In the event of a closure, our Remote Learning Provision will start immediately. Children in KS1 and KS2 will typically receive between 2 and 4 hours of remote learning each day. Children will follow the same curriculum as they would if they were attending school wherever possible.

Remote Teaching and Learning Information

Live teaching is offered via Microsoft Teams from Nursery to Year 6. A range of other platforms are used including Showbie in KS1 and KS2. This is used to assign, collect and review children’s work and allows staff to provide feedback on the remote learning undertaken.

Staff will maintain open lines of communication between home and school. Parents and carers will have clear points of contact for class teachers where questions can be asked, support can be offered and advice can be given. The Inclusion and Well- being team will also make calls to check in on families and offer guidance and support. Staff will monitor carefully that children are accessing and engaging with work and will connect with families who need help.

If a child is struggling to engage with remote learning, wherever possible, a place will be offered in school. Children with SEND needs will be supported online by support staff. These children may be set individualised work, have 1:1 meet-ups with the Inclusion Team or key staff, or be offered opportunities to work in break out rooms. Wherever possible, children with SEND will be offered a school place.

If a child is self-isolating, they will be given access to the same work as those in school.
